Valorie Hart, <a href="http://www.thevisualvamp.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">The Visual Vamp</a>, included my backyard in a round up of interesting backyards in the summer issue of New Orleans Home and Lifestyle magazine <a href="http://www.myneworleans.com/New-Orleans-Homes-Lifestyles/Summer-2014/" target="_blank">(here)</a>. The areas featured range from modest, funky ones such as mine, to much more elaborate and goregously landscaped ones. While the pics on the magazines website are lovely, many more pictures are available in the hard copy of the magazine. h. m. settoonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08120515504564079334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810339136726843596.post-17359026353300375092014-03-12T09:00:00.001-05:002014-03-12T09:00:26.343-05:00From Formal Dining to Billiards Room: Part Two<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
In my last post, I described the process of transforming a space from it's intended purpose as a formal dining room into a more useful (for a young family of 5), but equally glamorous billiards room. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9RvSBUIUY-w/UyBmnVhIN-I/AAAAAAAADrs/XaCg7rpc2Mc/s1600/other+corner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9RvSBUIUY-w/UyBmnVhIN-I/AAAAAAAADrs/XaCg7rpc2Mc/s1600/other+corner.jpg" height="400" width="226" /></a></div>
After the envelope was complete, I had the mouldings painted a deep, deep, almost black charcoal, Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xZLlGOQcHfU/UyBmoQMnyXI/AAAAAAAADr0/3hxgT3hwoqs/s1600/pillow+detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xZLlGOQcHfU/UyBmoQMnyXI/AAAAAAAADr0/3hxgT3hwoqs/s1600/pillow+detail.jpg" height="320" width="181" /></a></div>
I then layered in floor lamps from Restoration Hardware, acrylic stools by Kartell, a custom pillow for the chair and accessories.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-43YX7gHC3ig/UyBmWTDJqyI/AAAAAAAADqw/CH8dtxxPdFo/s1600/art+in+place2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-43YX7gHC3ig/UyBmWTDJqyI/AAAAAAAADqw/CH8dtxxPdFo/s1600/art+in+place2.jpg" height="320" width="181" /></a></div>

A commissioned art piece, an architectural fragment, and a soft ivory washed paint finish on the built in credenza soften the hard edges of the Lucite, crystal and chrome.<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XVZwPJkICqo/UwZhAoq65zI/AAAAAAAADp4/00o020K5bf8/s1600/pool+room1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XVZwPJkICqo/UwZhAoq65zI/AAAAAAAADp4/00o020K5bf8/s1600/pool+room1.jpg" height="640" width="388" /></a></div>
<br />
I have some clients, a young family with 3 children who live in a fantastic mid century house on Lake Ponchatrain. Before I joined the project, they had already renovated the house saving as many original features as possible, like the marble and terrazzo floor in the entry and great room. They did open the kitchen to the great room, creating an enormous space that has room for two sitting areas and a dining area for 8 by the kitchen:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-niFXoDt0eHM/UwZhCCr9kJI/AAAAAAAADqU/9eiyajZzYOU/s1600/living+room.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-niFXoDt0eHM/UwZhCCr9kJI/AAAAAAAADqU/9eiyajZzYOU/s1600/living+room.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While they do entertain quite a bit, they have a very informal lifestyle, so with a large casual dining area, they didn't feel like they needed a separate formal dining room. Furthermore, they had converted the large downstairs guest room to a t.v. room for the kids, so they didn't need another seating area. However, they did think they would enjoy a pool table. They had already purchased a large formal rug in shades of grey and champagne and had inherited the crystal chandelier when they bought the house. We may replace it one day, but decided to work around it for now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since the pool room is open across the center hall to the living room, we needed to make sure it comeplemented the white, gray, and black color scheme, as well as the mix of sleek furniture with rustic accents. You can see the cased opening to the pool room to the left in the photo below.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tG2cWdGX6JU/UwZhA38ZA5I/AAAAAAAADqA/Q6BE7SB8tTk/s1600/view+from+living.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tG2cWdGX6JU/UwZhA38ZA5I/AAAAAAAADqA/Q6BE7SB8tTk/s1600/view+from+living.jpg" height="400" width="281" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided that we needed a strong statement on the wall you face entering the room. Because of pool sticks, I was hesitant to use art or a mirror for that statement, so decided that a contemporary faux treatment would be stricking. Plus, it would give me the chance to blend the warm and cool grays present in the existing rug and wall color.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started off by drawing a grid of rectangles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r2wKUcJTkNI/UwZg_M-2dJI/AAAAAAAADpc/Y5TdkRac7cA/s1600/pool+room+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r2wKUcJTkNI/UwZg_M-2dJI/AAAAAAAADpc/Y5TdkRac7cA/s1600/pool+room+before.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I used Modern Masters metallics in a range of silvers and champagne. The key to the technique is to keep your paint in "stripes" in the pan.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9lJEDSrkNPI/UwZg_l6tQtI/AAAAAAAADps/t-5Y6Jn6vzc/s1600/pool+room+paint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9lJEDSrkNPI/UwZg_l6tQtI/AAAAAAAADps/t-5Y6Jn6vzc/s1600/pool+room+paint.jpg" height="451" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think carefully rolled a roller in the pan, trying not to blend the paints, and rolled the stripes onto the wall. I then quickly and lightly softened the stripes with a dry brush.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gvR4JzVgtnM/UwZg_fFCPXI/AAAAAAAADpg/1AFzUR6SXdE/s1600/pool+room+during.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gvR4JzVgtnM/UwZg_fFCPXI/AAAAAAAADpg/1AFzUR6SXdE/s1600/pool+room+during.jpg" height="391" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a shot with the sleek new pool table in place and the existing rug .<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5R1ZQYHBZ7g/UwZhAPR_eNI/AAAAAAAADpw/uS4OSH-cG1Q/s1600/pool+room+wall+finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5R1ZQYHBZ7g/UwZhAPR_eNI/AAAAAAAADpw/uS4OSH-cG1Q/s1600/pool+room+wall+finished.jpg" height="295" width="400" /></a></div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qctgzWIa9bE/UwYrWFMNmQI/AAAAAAAADpI/_fTq3G4TJQA/s1600/sofa+after.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qctgzWIa9bE/UwYrWFMNmQI/AAAAAAAADpI/_fTq3G4TJQA/s1600/sofa+after.jpg" height="640" width="534" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Sometimes small change can make a big diggerence in updating a room. I was hired to do a rare exterior faux finish job--painting new shutters to make them look old and weathered, and the lady of the house wanted to make a few minor changes inside. One thing she wanted to change was to recover her pillows on her existing off-white slipcovered sofa. She had already bought the fabric and just needed the covers made. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CCn8rBT1CRE/UwYrVBXmQMI/AAAAAAAADpE/UgHUu6Vqjk4/s1600/sofa+before+big+pillow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CCn8rBT1CRE/UwYrVBXmQMI/AAAAAAAADpE/UgHUu6Vqjk4/s1600/sofa+before+big+pillow.jpg" height="542" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I thought the fabric looked great in the room, but I didn't think two pillows recovered would make much impact and thought that doing 4 pillows would look too cluttered. A more modern idea: one giant pillow. I just used a body pillow from Target as the form. It might not be the most practical solution for a heavily used sofa, but this is a little used formal living room. Plus you can still sit comfortably in the corners without moving the pillow. I think the large surface lets the pattern shine and the one long form gives a more modern feeling.<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FtY5UmzxcQQ/Uvufsg1chdI/AAAAAAAADo0/TYshehbkH60/s1600/after-closet_300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FtY5UmzxcQQ/Uvufsg1chdI/AAAAAAAADo0/TYshehbkH60/s1600/after-closet_300.jpg" height="640" width="536" /></a></div>
<br />
I am in the middle of one of those simple (or at least it seemed like) home changes that snowball quickly. We, and by that I mean Thomas, decided to purchase a vintage hi-fi console. It's actually beautiful and I love it, but it's large and meant that some re-arranging had to take place. Furthermore, I needed to do a little freshening up in my office for the Apartment Therapy home tour. <br />
<br />
Anyway, after moving the furniture around, I was ready to really settle into the modified spaces, but here's the problem---with all the "little" rearranging I've done, books are in places they're not usable, my sewing patterns and supplies are downstairs while me sewing machine is upstairs, and I've crammed too many things into too many storage nooks "temporarily." With the dreary weather we have had, I decided to get started adjusting. Well, here's the problem---there's no place to adjust things, so my first item of business to empty one of the few closets I have to better organize., The problem: I wouldn't have had this stuff in the closet if I had had a good home for them in the first place! And, I swear, we're not hoarders---I don't have stacks of old magazines, boxes and boxes of holiday décor, a gigantic stash of crafting supplies, I (like most people), just have more stuff than places to put them.<br />
<br />
Okay, you can relate to that dilemma, but why the HGTV, Real Simple, etc. hate? Because they offer such unrealistic "solutions" to storage. Look at that closet above from Real Simple; whose wardrobe consists of only items that co-ordinate with their storage. Plus, if I only had two coats and a scarf, I wouldn't need storage inspiration in the first place! They don't run that many design shows anymore (it's all 24/7 real estate), but I can still remember the show that caused me to stop my relationship with HGTV, once my favorite channel of all time. The show is long since cancelled, so no need to name names, but it involved the "designer" redoing the extremely large great room of a physical therapist who occasionally saw clients at home. At the beginning of the show, the room had a seating area, a physical therapy area with massage table, a home office area separate from that of the therapist's husband who had an office in another room and a treadmill. Anyway, at the end, the room was only a living room with a small writing desk. The rest of the items vanished without even the briefest of explanations as to why now they had other homes. I mean, wow, designing rooms would be so easy if I could just throw 75% of the regularly used items into the street without addressing to live without them. It's the same with pinterest....a stuffed closet will be transformed into a stunning space without any real mention of where the rest of the crap went. Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of the debris of most closets are just that, debris that should be disposed of, but not all. <br />
<br />
Oh well, rant over. Now I'm back off to decide where to stash the rest of my books. I tried just stacking them in front of a fireplace for a touch of relaxed BoHo chic, but it just looked like I had recently moved in and hadn't bought a bookcase yet.h. m. settoonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08120515504564079334noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810339136726843596.post-92000518224692499022014-02-10T22:05:00.001-06:002014-02-10T22:05:34.714-06:00How to Paint a Chippy, Heavily Distressed Finish<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

One of my favorite pieces of furniture is my sewing table in my guest room. I discussed my inspiration for the color and the geust room<a href="http://optimismandwhitepaint.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-green-desk_3.html#!" target="_blank"> here</a>, but never discussed the process.<br />
<br />
The desk was the ideal candidate for painting; it was perfect for my purpose, very sturdy and well made, and with a regrettable finish. The legs were standard 90s fruitwood, and the top was in a contrasting, slightly damaged, mustard crackle finish. All this added up to a piece I had no qualms about painting. <br />
<br />
<br />
Here's the desk before. I sanded it lightly and wiped it with mineral spirits. Because I was going for a heavily distressed look, I didn't bother to putty the small imperfections in the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Jz5O1uluG8/UvmYJsE3boI/AAAAAAAADnA/AEe4mXOcOmE/s1600/green+desk+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Jz5O1uluG8/UvmYJsE3boI/AAAAAAAADnA/AEe4mXOcOmE/s1600/green+desk+before.jpg" height="640" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because I was planning to expose the stained finish through layers of paint, I did have to co-ordinate the top to the legs. I covered the top with a standard faux bois finish (tutorial <a href="http://optimismandwhitepaint.blogspot.com/2009/04/knock-on-fake-wood-step-by-step-faux.html" target="_blank">here</a>), immulating a fruitwood finish with paint, layers of wood stain, and a graining tool.</div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n7-N8crqLe4/UvmYMmXLX-I/AAAAAAAADoU/u4qkqX0EqXU/s1600/green+desk+with+faux+bois+top.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n7-N8crqLe4/UvmYMmXLX-I/AAAAAAAADoU/u4qkqX0EqXU/s1600/green+desk+with+faux+bois+top.jpg" height="640" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's now, after the initial prep is finished and before beginning the actual painting begins when you need to plan for your finished look. With a real painted antique there are several aspects that give the finish that valued patina. There is breakdown and fading of the paint, there's the build up of furniture polish, dirt, oil, candle smoke, etc. There is crazing and cracking of the finish. There is wear on edges and corners. There can be physical damage--dings, worm wood holes, gouges, etc. When you are making a "fauxtique," you need to decide which of these things you want to immolate. I wanted actual chips in the finish (not just sanded edges), and a dark, stained patina suggesting years of wax and grime. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started with taping off sections of the stained finish. I made sure they were irregular like chips in paint and on the places you would expect wear and trauma---at edges, at corners of drawers, around the handle. You can also use wax, wood glue, putty, etc. to shield these areas. The idea is just to create a chip like barrier between the bare wood and the top coats of paint.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OyTqA_4MTTw/UvmYJjIf_PI/AAAAAAAADm8/niAsReLIgpA/s1600/green+desk+chips+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OyTqA_4MTTw/UvmYJjIf_PI/AAAAAAAADm8/niAsReLIgpA/s1600/green+desk+chips+1.jpg" height="320" width="237" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyegwwcbahE/UvmYMthDkHI/AAAAAAAADn8/AztXVuRngxQ/s1600/green+desk+chips+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyegwwcbahE/UvmYMthDkHI/AAAAAAAADn8/AztXVuRngxQ/s1600/green+desk+chips+2.jpg" height="320" width="237" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I then covered the table in a tinted adhesive primer. It may look white in the picture, but in reality it was a pale, bluish gray. I like to use tinted primer, because it serves as the primer and a base layer to contrast with the top coat, saving a step<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RymRG9WmkDo/UvmYL09OF2I/AAAAAAAADnw/XoEvemQMih8/s1600/green+desk+tinted+primer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RymRG9WmkDo/UvmYL09OF2I/AAAAAAAADnw/XoEvemQMih8/s1600/green+desk+tinted+primer.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then sanded the stable with steel wool. I like using steel wool, because the metal often reacts with paint finishes to great a burnished, streaky effect.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was now ready for the greeen. One thing that can happen to paint over time is an uneven breakdown of pigments, sometimes causing a streaky effect. I like to make my materials work for me, so to help create this illusion of unstable color, I actually used a mixture of several different paints in the same pan that I purposedly did not mix.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
After a couple of streaky coats: <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gXcpopu1wD0/UvmYLaXBq2I/AAAAAAAADng/BjS--ufvK8w/s1600/green+desk+streaky+paint+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gXcpopu1wD0/UvmYLaXBq2I/AAAAAAAADng/BjS--ufvK8w/s1600/green+desk+streaky+paint+1.jpg" height="228" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The nest step is yet more sanding, then time for the real fun. First, the tape is removed, revealing your "chips." I lightly sanded around each one to reveal more of the undercoat:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I was happy with the chippiness, it was time to add my layers of grime. I used a light stain for overall color, and added a darker one in crevices and for depth.</div>

<br />
Like many decorators, I love, love, love painted furniture. Unless it's truly beautiful, either because of spectacular graining or a wonderful time-won patina, wood usually leaves me cold. There is a reason it's called "brown furniture," and I do feel a sea of brown furniture is oppressive. And, of course, a big part of my work is painting other people's brown furniture. I'm still in awe of how the right paint color and right technique can transform things from dreary to fabulous. <br />
<br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HW9qVKQqolM/Uvgto1lBrEI/AAAAAAAADjA/uXtofHJuGGE/s1600/Sena-12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HW9qVKQqolM/Uvgto1lBrEI/AAAAAAAADjA/uXtofHJuGGE/s1600/Sena-12.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></td></tr>

<br />
But here's the deal; there are no absolutes in good design. Most bloggers and published designers know the power of a good sound bite, and declarations like "Every room needs a touch of red" and "Never use dust ruffles" make good copy, but in reality, every room is an individual case study and what works or doesn't varies. The same thing for painting furniture: not everything piece of brown wood should be painted. The desire to Paint! All! The! Wood! is just as much of a knee jerk reactions as "Painting wood is sacreliege." The truth is that some wood (or more likely wood veneer) is in fact hideous and should be covered while some wood pieces are very handsome (and valuable) in their original state and should not be painted; furthermore, most spaces look their very best with a mix of wood and painted pieces.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<strong>1. Is it worth painting correctly?</strong> I'm going to assume you're just not planning to slap on a couple of coats of spray paint, and would be going for a professional finish. Here's the thing, painting a piece of furniture correctly (i.e. prepping the surface, including repairs), priming, sanding, painting with multiple coats, sanding, finishing, etc., requires quite a bit of work. And if you don't have a stock of supplies already and have to purchase everything, the price of painting can add up quickly. The small gray chest in the opening photo required about $75 worth of supplies (among other things, the gold paint used on the detailing is incredibly expensive). So before investing the time, effort and money to paint the furniture, ask yourself if it's sturdy, in good shape, serves your need. Paint can do a lot to make things more beautiful, but it can't fix bad proportions and clunky carving.<br />
<br />

</tbody></table>
The large French chests above were prefect candidates for painting. Expensive to replace, Mass produced and not special, but decent lines, perfect size, and well constructed and sturdy. I painted them to blend with the new gray monochromatic color scheme .<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong>2. Could it be valuable?</strong> Now, don't assume just because something is old, it's an expensive antique. Factories have been churning out crappy furniture since the Industrial Revolution, so even a piece can be an actual Victorian antique and still be mass produced crap. However, painting a valuable piece can destroy much of that value. If your uncertain over a piece's provenance, do some online research, check for manufacturer's marks and info, etc.<br />
<br />
<strong>3. Is a painted finish historically accurate for the piece?</strong> Craftsman have been painting furniture since the days of ancient Egypt, so there is certainly a case to be made for painting old pieces and reproductions; at the same time, there were furniture styles and periods when painting was rare, and painting a piece that was never meant to be painted can look awkward. Some examples: Painted furniture was very popular in 18th century France, so most Louis XV and Louis XVI styles look appropriate and great painted. Same for the currently popular Swedish style. Simple, primitive, country furniture was also commonly painted , so Windsor chairs, farm tables, and benches also usually look good painted. On the other hand, Mid Century Modern furniture was rarely designed to be painted--in fact, the most popular items were designed in sympathy with current architectural ideals which were all about respecting materials. Therefore, I always think most painted MCM pieces just look a little off. If you have a MCM piece with a finish so damaged it's not fixable, I think the best option is to paint it a wood like color: black, brown, warm grey.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aOPnRNiLcBY/UvjCjDUB5OI/AAAAAAAADjY/DoPF8LTkFzw/s1600/bfa6cee1ac6e0e285368c9095ee5cb20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aOPnRNiLcBY/UvjCjDUB5OI/AAAAAAAADjY/DoPF8LTkFzw/s1600/bfa6cee1ac6e0e285368c9095ee5cb20.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo by Jacqueline Marque for Apartment Therapy</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
In this shot of my den, you see a painted table and a MCM bookcase I would never paint. The table was a perfect candidate: the perfect size and height for a kind of center/tea table/ cocktail table, sturdy and well crafted from solid wood, but mass produced with a heavily water damaged finish. The mid century piece has a perfectly intact finish, and I feel the wood tone is integral to its design integrity.<strong></strong><br />
<strong></strong><br />
<strong></strong><br />
<strong></strong><br />
<strong>4. Is it a family heirloom?</strong> Now, this one gets touchy. I dread having to work around big dreary wood pieces that can't be touched because it was Aunt Lucille's; however, I do understand the sentiment. And I have also felt the regret for impulsively painting something in a trendy color (which of course I convinced my self was a new classic) and then wishing I hadn't. Before painting a family piece, in addition to the above questions, ask yourself a few more: 1. I am I the end of the line, or do I need to preserve this for other family members who might want it (in it's original condition) one day? 2. Is my hatred for the finish long standing or is it just because I want a new look? 3. Is my sentiment for the piece itself (i.e. looking at it reminds me of family dinners on Sunday) or because of who it belonged too. If you do decide to paint a family piece, my main piece of advice to try to pick a truly timeless color that you love and complements the piece, not just slap on gray chalk paint because Swedish style is in.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I love painted furniture and get an undeniable rush from transforming a piece from dull dreary brown to fantastic. However, after some time and experience, I've learned to not rush into a paint job without considering whether it's in the piece's or room's best interest to paint it.<br />

One common phrase you here a lot, a particularly bittersweet one, is the statement that something (a place, a building, a favorite bar or restaurant) is "ain't dere no more ." In the past frantic year that has resulted in this blog's year of radio silence, one thing that "ain't dere no more" is a lot of my home's decor. Luckily, I had the privilege of being included in Valorie Hart's<a href="http://thevisualvamp.blogspot.com/2013/09/proud-of-house-proud.html"> House Proud</a>, so I have some beautiful pictures to document the way things used to be.<br />
<br />
Now I couldn't afford a full out redo, even if I had wanted to (which I didn't---I LIKE my stuff), so it's all about paint, reshuffling furniture etc. What Valorie calls "smoke and mirrors" and my old boss used to call "fluffing and puffing." I just knew I wanted a change. I'll talk more about it all later, but I though I'd start with some pics of the new living room.<span id="goog_1036749064"></span><br />

I'm plugging away on my list <a href="http://optimismandwhitepaint.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-list.html">(here)</a>. One of the items for the living room is to make a new throw for the sofa. This is crucial, because my dog lives on the sofa. I have a plain cotton blanket that I use to protect the slipcover as much as possible, but, let's just say, the slipcover, even though washed regularly, is no longer show room fresh. Therefore, I've been using a decorative throw to hide the stains when guests are expected: i whip off the plain white one and throw on a decorative one. For most of the year, the throw was a piece of black/white/gold foral that I had quilted on to a jersey sheet to make a vintage looking throw. It went well with my graphic black/white pillows. However, I've been feeling the need for change, so I moved the black and white to the guest room and brought back my old faux raccoon pillow covers. I needed a new throw, so I decided to kill a few birds with one stone.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-__iKxtyRrSc/UKJnEiUDDBI/AAAAAAAADdE/-ZC6f7GhDF0/s1600/quilt.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-__iKxtyRrSc/UKJnEiUDDBI/AAAAAAAADdE/-ZC6f7GhDF0/s640/quilt.jpg" width="508" /></a></div>
I've been trying to improve my sewing skills. I also have a stash of
fabrics I've been saving for one day. And finally, I've been
handsewing at night while watching tv with my partner in order to curb
my late night snacking. Having project definitely distracts me from
eating, and I certainly don't want to stain my projects. Therefore, I
decided to make a quilt for the throw out of some favorite fabrics.<br />
<br />
At
this point though, I had to save me from me. One of my issues with
hobbies, including sewing, in the past is that I try to ignore the
learning curve and jump directly into a project that is too complicated
for me, leading to frustration and abandonment of said project. I
didn't want this to happen with the quilt, so I ignored my inclination
to try a complictated pieced pattern and keep the fabric squares in
roughly the same size as the remnants. I used some quilts from
Anthropologie as a quide. <br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">quilt available at <a href="http://www.anthropologie.com/">Anthropologie</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The back is made from left overs from a project (the print is so big that I had to buy a massive amount to make matched pillows--i did not have enough to match the back of the quilt, but it's busy enough I don't mind):<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The quilt ended up being a fun scrapbook...it has fabric from a lot of my more recent projects: my kitchen curtains, my bathroom curtains, my window seat, a client project, and an old ottoman slipcover. I love the way it turned out. <br />

The older I get, the more I love fall. Maybe it's because it comes after New Orleans' brutally hot and humid summers. Maybe it's the residual memories of the new beginning the school year always represented. Maybe it's the chance to nestle in for a few months. Or maybe it's the focus on friends and family that the holiday brings. Whatever, the reason, I love it. <br />
<br />

I've shared my love of lists with you (and an update follows on how I'm doing on my to-do list to prep the house for my December 21 at home reception), and I always love to start my resolutions, for want of a better word) in the fall. My birthday falls at the end of November, and it has always seemed a great time for reflecting on the good (and bad) that has come before and my hopes and plans for the future. I've been working on a list of goals for the coming year. I've started the planning process, and I'm letting it marinate for a little while.<br />
<br />
It's one of the areas, really, that I'm torn over. On the one hand, how can there be anything wrong with self-improvement. On the other, I sometimes think that if I took all the effort I've spent on improving myself (with, I have to admit, only qualified success) and used it to accept myself as is, I'd be better off. But then, I wonder, is that a valid point, or a cop out? At any rate, I'm come to realize that, paradoxically, the main point I need to accept about myself is that I'll always be trying to improve. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K_Tq5Q1UZi4/UKEQZrtbIoI/AAAAAAAADbg/pYGQcub9BVA/s1600/phone+photos+023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K_Tq5Q1UZi4/UKEQZrtbIoI/AAAAAAAADbg/pYGQcub9BVA/s640/phone+photos+023.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cleopatra and Damien focusing on their futures....I'm pretty sure their future goals included more naps.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
So, my first goal is to finish planning my year. Then I plan to share some of my goals and how I hope to achieve them. One of the first goals is to lose the 30 pounds I put on in 2005. I like to describe it as my Katrina weight, but honestly, I had gained about 12 pounds of it pre-storm. And in any case---7 years is way past the statute of limitations on weight gain blame.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MD2k-BINRX4/UKEQmkTfPkI/AAAAAAAADbw/tWlL9KkVfVU/s1600/phone+photos+012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MD2k-BINRX4/UKEQmkTfPkI/AAAAAAAADbw/tWlL9KkVfVU/s640/phone+photos+012.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, I've made some progress on the list. Most importantly, I (with Thomas) have managed to cross off the two very big items: The fence is fixed, and the laundry room is done. All else, really, is gravy.</div>

My laundry room is finally finished. (To be honest.....95% finished. I want to find an indoor/outdoor rug to soften the concrete floor, and there is some black wiring on one wall that needs to be hidden somehow---but I'm not too worried about either issue)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-giUr_PzuGv8/UJ52mnGcwkI/AAAAAAAADaw/Miw9n5XcdqE/s1600/table.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-giUr_PzuGv8/UJ52mnGcwkI/AAAAAAAADaw/Miw9n5XcdqE/s640/table.jpg" width="404" /> </a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I started planning this project about seven months ago (first post<a href="http://optimismandwhitepaint.blogspot.com/2012/03/wanted-my-own-beautiful-launderette.html"> here </a>), but got bogged down my work, lack of funds, lack of focus etc. And since the laundry room is in a lean-to addition outside that is non-climate controlled except for a ceiling fan, working on it during a New Orleans summer was not a good idea.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here's where I started, a laundry room that had become a junked up mess, with a non-working dryer and a temperamental washer:</div>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pm6xYZX_KY/UIakNKML_PI/AAAAAAAADL8/fbUleeAED48/s1600/laundry+before+3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pm6xYZX_KY/UIakNKML_PI/AAAAAAAADL8/fbUleeAED48/s320/laundry+before+3.jpg" width="239" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RNZ73AyKtk8/UIakSjgODFI/AAAAAAAADME/8_L4laHFKwc/s1600/laundry+before+4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RNZ73AyKtk8/UIakSjgODFI/AAAAAAAADME/8_L4laHFKwc/s320/laundry+before+4.jpg" width="239" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BkI3J4YISdU/UIakYMBieDI/AAAAAAAADMM/K3ovN-9UJrs/s1600/laundry+before+5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BkI3J4YISdU/UIakYMBieDI/AAAAAAAADMM/K3ovN-9UJrs/s320/laundry+before+5.jpg" width="239" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vrh8YjmqG_M/UIakdPjGSNI/AAAAAAAADMU/CQrJ5H90O0Q/s1600/laundry+before+6.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vrh8YjmqG_M/UIakdPjGSNI/AAAAAAAADMU/CQrJ5H90O0Q/s320/laundry+before+6.jpg" width="239" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0sDUS1axw0E/UIakmHzNkSI/AAAAAAAADMo/RTb2-UTE3ko/s1600/laundry+before.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0sDUS1axw0E/UIakmHzNkSI/AAAAAAAADMo/RTb2-UTE3ko/s320/laundry+before.jpg" width="239" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I did struggle and flounder a little with how to finish the laundry room, especially since I had no money to work with. But then two things happened. Number one, I decided to embrace the challange, and to see if I could do a no money makeover using only things that I had. Leftover from jobs, I had plenty of paint and supplies, and a great graphic trellis stencil. I also had furniture left over from various moves and projects, so I decided to see how close I could come to my original inspirational pics---bright, bold, happy, with graphic pattern and vintage appeal. Second, a fairy godmother gifted us with a brand new washer/dryer set as a "wedding" present, and I was determined to honor the gift with as nice a room as possible. I think I succeeded. All I know, is since the appliances arrived Thursday, I've actually been enjoying doing laundry!<br />
<br />
After:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DJtHa56jcgs/UJ5zwE8U1kI/AAAAAAAADZs/gvkVQ5KKTMo/s1600/laundry+room+after.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DJtHa56jcgs/UJ5zwE8U1kI/AAAAAAAADZs/gvkVQ5KKTMo/s640/laundry+room+after.jpg" width="398" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The trellis stencil was used on a client project. The old green painted china cabinet (antique purists should now that it was only painted after being damaged in a flood) was picked up at a moving sale, and had been being used in my studio. However, it wasn't in a convenient location, and I realized that switching it and the shutter screen would work better. Having the smaller footprint, really opened up the room. The chairs and slips are World Market finds used in a long ago apartment. They are so useful, I held on to them, and drag them outside for parties. The tray table was a steal (the mirrored top was broken) that has been moved around quite a bit. The tile that replaced the mirror was left over from a friend's project. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0GlC53zo4gY/UJ5z183SQpI/AAAAAAAADZ0/GJygCOyXfc8/s1600/laundry+room.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0GlC53zo4gY/UJ5z183SQpI/AAAAAAAADZ0/GJygCOyXfc8/s640/laundry+room.jpg" width="606" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I originally had put blinds up, but wasn't happy with how they looked. This is one danger of trying to make what you already have fit when it just doesn't. I sewed the tie on shade out of an old sheet (the rest of the set eventually shredded in the wash), trimmed with vintage trim. The trim is left from the vintage cafe curtains that originally hung in the laundry room. The fabric was too damaged from Katrina flooding to save, but the trim, once washed, was salvagable. I had saved it, just in case. The treatement is based on one in Mary Emmerling's Quick Decorating, and is designed so that the full panel can be let down like a Roman shade for complete privacy, tie at 2/3 height like a cafe curtain, tied all up like a valance, or at half mast, as shown, again like a soft Roman Shade.<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iU0SZju_mf0/UJ51UJN3bFI/AAAAAAAADaU/mN_EaHmRne4/s1600/lr+afte+better.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iU0SZju_mf0/UJ51UJN3bFI/AAAAAAAADaU/mN_EaHmRne4/s640/lr+afte+better.jpg" width="478" /></a></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I moved the wine box shelves to over the appliances, and tried to stage them attractively, but reasonably.</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I painted the back wall to look like aged subway tile. The three mirrors were a gift from a friend, and I rigged up a scone from a clip on lamp and curtain hardware. I wrapped the cord in jute for a more finished look. The black wall boxes were from Big Lots and had been part of a gallery wall in the living room a while back. Again, I saved them for future use.</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Laundry Room update:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had to work Saturday, and Sunday I had some client samples to work on and a client's piece of furniture to paint, so I didn't make quite as much progress as I would have liked. I did however manage to finish stenciling one wall and, after the appliances were picked up, prime (twice) the wall behind the machines where the "subway tile" is going.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One thing I did manage to finish was the cabinet for the laundry sink (except for the pulls--I didn't paint them because I was planning to replace them with something nicer---then I realized the sink isn't level and the doors don't quite line up. I don't want fancy pulls to call attention to this, so I'm going to just paint those.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before it looked like this, plain white melamine. Though my sink hasn't been that white since 2007. I did spend quite a bit of time scrubbing it this weekend, though, and have faith I can get almost that spotless:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tv6-FJ1f6HU/UJcbFkOvcpI/AAAAAAAADYA/bjBmN2klFD0/s1600/laundry+sink+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tv6-FJ1f6HU/UJcbFkOvcpI/AAAAAAAADYA/bjBmN2klFD0/s400/laundry+sink+before.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wanted a finish something like this metal covered chest from Restoration Hardware. However, I wanted a more distressed finish---something that looked really industrial and used.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Something more like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

My partner is disconnecting the washer and dryer (marrying the son of a plumber is an excellent idea) to be picked up early tomorrow by Bridge House, a New Orleans charity. After they are gone and before the replacements arrive, I plan to paint that wall in faux subway tile. I did already switch the wine box shelves to the appliance side. I do like them better there. I also started the stencil on the other walls. (Why yes, it's a fake Imperial trellis pattern. Why no, it's not 2008. Why do you ask?). The sink cabinet is primed for it's distressed metal finish, and I've already spent hours scrubbing paint stains out of that utility sink. If everything goes well, by next Thursday, the laundry room will be done. Wish me luckh. m. settoonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08120515504564079334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810339136726843596.post-53446387860340554592012-11-01T15:12:00.000-05:002012-11-01T15:12:39.077-05:00my beautiful launderette: final decisions<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fGabuP6TJGg/UJLUKncVJLI/AAAAAAAADWg/A6ayOqlfGmU/s1600/faux+subway+tile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fGabuP6TJGg/UJLUKncVJLI/AAAAAAAADWg/A6ayOqlfGmU/s640/faux+subway+tile.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
All images from Pinterest. My laundry inspiration board is<a href="http://pinterest.com/hms70119/laundry-room-inspiration/"> here.</a><br />
<br />
<br />
It's official: I am getting a new washer and dryer. Words cannot express how excited and grateful I am. The old washer and dryer are scheduled to be picked up by charity on Sat. morning, with the delivery of the new units coming on Wednesday or Thursday. Just enough time to do a paint treatment on the wet wall in the laundry room. <br />
<br />
Since I will have new, shiny white machines, I am switching gears slightly back to my original, more cheerful idea for the laundry room. I will still use the wine box shelves, and vanity painted liked age metal, but will probably change the wall color to a brighter shade. One wall, however, I want to paint to look like subway tile---the wall with the washer and dryer. Like so:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KrE7mgYOKuE/UJLURKBacNI/AAAAAAAADWo/YRSh-IGBn6c/s1600/subway+tile+wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KrE7mgYOKuE/UJLURKBacNI/AAAAAAAADWo/YRSh-IGBn6c/s640/subway+tile+wall.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
And I like the look of the shelves on the tile so much, I think I'm going to flip the wine boxes to over the washer and dryer. Since I'm switching back to a top load washer, I won't have as much "counter" space as before, and it will be more convenient to have a place for the detergent, etc. on the wall above them. It's no biggie--just a few screws per box, a little putty, and no one will ever know.<br />
<br />
I do like the way the mirror area is defined, as below, though, and am thinking about doing that around my vanity mirrors: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Cl-vlQ2BNEU/UJLUTrsx95I/AAAAAAAADWw/uzr_uKfV4WQ/s1600/subway+tile+mirror.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Cl-vlQ2BNEU/UJLUTrsx95I/AAAAAAAADWw/uzr_uKfV4WQ/s640/subway+tile+mirror.jpg" width="460" /></a></div>
As for as the faux tile technique, it's pretty simple: you paint the wall in the color of your grout in a flat finish. let dry. draw off the "tiles" with a level, tape them off with 1/4" masking tape, them roll on the tile color in satin or gloss. top with poly if desired, then remove tape. It's tedious, but not hard. depending on how much detail I'm prepared to go to, I may add some cracks, shadows, and highlights. I love the love of white tile and black grout, so that's what I'm planning to go to. That much black and white means back to the zebra roman shade.<br />
<br />
I'm also planning to make a sconce for the vanity area out of a clip light and part of a curtain rod bracket. it's not as cool as the one below, but it will give you the idea. I'm planning to wrap or braid the cord with jute for a vintage look.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mETDu28eMfA/UJLUWmtwuoI/AAAAAAAADW4/XJ7PH1QsfiA/s1600/clip+light.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mETDu28eMfA/UJLUWmtwuoI/AAAAAAAADW4/XJ7PH1QsfiA/s640/clip+light.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
I've already started the prep work---removing everything from the walls, puttying holes, and priming the vanity. My plan is to disconnect the washer and dryer tomorrow, and maybe roll on the base coat.<br />
<br />
I know I've been going on and on about this damn laundry room for almost a year. Thanks for your patience and for still caring.h. m. settoonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08120515504564079334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810339136726843596.post-24269872856515208752012-10-31T13:36:00.002-05:002012-10-31T13:36:34.665-05:00slipcovered industrial bar stools<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WbrdbZeTpJs/UJFn_bFzGXI/AAAAAAAADVY/j_Mwly_hy-I/s1600/stool+slipped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WbrdbZeTpJs/UJFn_bFzGXI/AAAAAAAADVY/j_Mwly_hy-I/s640/stool+slipped.jpg" width="304" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When we moved into the house 5 years ago after the renovations were complete, I had this setup in the kitchen under the window: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Xh1ts-3gLTk/Szuir25TOFI/AAAAAAAACAc/MFF-4zq6EWE/s1600/kitchen+vignette.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Xh1ts-3gLTk/Szuir25TOFI/AAAAAAAACAc/MFF-4zq6EWE/s320/kitchen+vignette.jpg" width="279" /></a></div>
It was cute, but there was not really space fore dining chairs---but it was a case of using what I had at the time, and I really liked having the softness and pattern of the upholstery balancing the wood cabinets on the other side.<br />
<br />
As time went on, I switched out the curtains (don't worry the green ones made out of the fantastic vintage sheet just moved to another room) for these also made out of vintage fabric. One reason I switched them is because I had enough of the vintage floral to make curtains for my glass doored cabinets:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ekQjBni65nc/Tja7OTVHqwI/AAAAAAAACl0/wqRMkQu6S20/s1600/ceiling+view.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ekQjBni65nc/Tja7OTVHqwI/AAAAAAAACl0/wqRMkQu6S20/s640/ceiling+view.jpg" width="520" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Note: in real life, the backsplash is much brighter and the cabinet doors don't read as striped.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Other changes, including selling the original table, the need for more storage in the kitchen, and the need to find a home for my partner's beloved baker's rack--(don't ask me, I don't understand why he likes it either), I moved the baker's rack in front of the window.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wbodg7ROHGA/UJFnznv4IAI/AAAAAAAADVE/hEHgcaYR2KE/s1600/bakers+rack+head+on.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wbodg7ROHGA/UJFnznv4IAI/AAAAAAAADVE/hEHgcaYR2KE/s640/bakers+rack+head+on.jpg" width="398" /> </a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I didn't hate this setup. I liked the extra storage, and it did provide privacy. It was awkward with the chairs, and we eventually replaced them with these great industrial style stools from world market. Side note--I know industrial is trendy right now, but I've honestly been loving touches of industrial design, including stools, for years. I dragged home my first rusting metal cart in the mid 1990s: I really liked the stools, including the wood, but I felt this whole area had gotten a little dull, literally. I mised my pattern and color from the upholstery. I also got fed up trying to open and close the window (why yes, I occasionally burn dinner filling the kitchen with smoke....why do you ask?) with the rack in the way. Plus, I felt it really closed in an already small space. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i2dxQVQThGM/UJFn5qUgC3I/AAAAAAAADVM/uPM1e7S5yTM/s1600/stool+head+on.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i2dxQVQThGM/UJFn5qUgC3I/AAAAAAAADVM/uPM1e7S5yTM/s320/stool+head+on.jpg" width="268" />I </a></div>
<br />
Then I remembered this kitchen. I don't remember where it came from, though. I know it was in a magazine. I think Cottage Living, but I'm not sure. What I am sure about is that I loved those slipcovered stools from the moment I saw them. I remembered this image, looked at my stools and realized I could have that look. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wbodg7ROHGA/UJFnznv4IAI/AAAAAAAADVE/hEHgcaYR2KE/s1600/bakers+rack+head+on.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-to74pmdsJYg/UJFonJNKGKI/AAAAAAAADWE/G43nEGyLDDE/s1600/4294108956_9facb97d52.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-to74pmdsJYg/UJFonJNKGKI/AAAAAAAADWE/G43nEGyLDDE/s640/4294108956_9facb97d52.jpg" width="608" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The fabric is from a beloved and ink stained shirt. I loved the color and stripes so much I saved it for a potential project. I loved the way the stripe looks with the floral and how it pulls in aqua from the adjoining office and back splash. They are loose and just slip on the stools like a hat. It was only after making the slips, though, that I realized they looked like prison hats from a 1930s movie. I'm okay with that though. <br />
<br />
<br />
Truth in blogging: The stools are used rarely. At most once a week. Therefore, I didn't secure the slips. They slide around a little if they've been sat on, but it's easy enough to straighten them. If I used them daily, though, the looseness would be an issue. I'd have to find a way to attach them, either with velcro, ties, or something else. As of now, it hasn't presented enough of an issue for my to take the time and effort.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2wlmXnwY5RA/UJFoP1b3STI/AAAAAAAADVo/2r1BZycgm68/s1600/kitchen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2wlmXnwY5RA/UJFoP1b3STI/AAAAAAAADVo/2r1BZycgm68/s640/kitchen.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
In conjunction with some other small changes, I switched the baker's rack with a metal cart I found in my father's pasture with peeling paint in a combo of royal blue and John Deere green. I love the way it turned out. I still have storage for things like my dutch ovens and mixer, but it keeps the room so much more open. And I love the splash of color with the vintage daperies. <br />

Update on laundry and to do list: I've done a couple of small items on the list, so that's going well. The laundry room is kind of on hold...but for a good reason. I have reason to believe a fairy godmother is going to gift us with a new washer/dryer set for our commitment ceremony; in that case, if i have fresh, white appliances and don't have to work around a mis-matched washer, I will definitely make some different paint decisions. I will keep y'all posted.h. m. settoonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08120515504564079334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810339136726843596.post-60830855454202811522012-10-29T09:26:00.001-05:002012-10-29T09:26:20.538-05:00a modern fireplace finish (and a list update)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

On Saturday, I showed you a sneak peak of a modern decorative paint finish in metallics that I had been working on for a friend's fireplace. I have an after to share. After her living room is finished....the furniture should start arriving this week, I'll show you an after after.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nluxoTv64zA/UIvhhpsdLlI/AAAAAAAADTU/LcMwx95Xov0/s1600/dr+fireplace+sneak+peek.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nluxoTv64zA/UIvhhpsdLlI/AAAAAAAADTU/LcMwx95Xov0/s640/dr+fireplace+sneak+peek.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
I drew off large rectangles (based on the fire box size) with a level, taped then, and created the finish with four different shades of paint blended with a little glaze. I was going for a very organic feel, vaguely referencing horn.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i2hM1Ze8lwo/UI6QoVdb6RI/AAAAAAAADUo/Wf9aZoJJSBE/s1600/detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i2hM1Ze8lwo/UI6QoVdb6RI/AAAAAAAADUo/Wf9aZoJJSBE/s640/detail.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>

And Sunday, I took advantage of a beautiful day, with plenty of peace and quiet, to start tackling my <a href="http://optimismandwhitepaint.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-list.html">list</a>. I had so much regular housework to do (the consequence of a busy schedule), that I couldn't do a lot, but I felt good about getting started.<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YsUtGFrLxYk/UIvdS3hY2XI/AAAAAAAADSw/Nx4RrvX1q44/s1600/150096600051910898_Qk7TRGbZ_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="636" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YsUtGFrLxYk/UIvdS3hY2XI/AAAAAAAADSw/Nx4RrvX1q44/s640/150096600051910898_Qk7TRGbZ_b.jpg" width="640" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you like being busy? While my absolute favorite way to spend a day is puttering around my own home, moving a pillow here, a chair there, maybe a little light housework (I KNOW, right......who would ever believe that I would come to enjoy cleaning...even a little)...maybe a little reading and a little cooking...possibly having guests over...I do adore a full day when it's full of fun busy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A side note: It's what I always imagined life was like as an adult: fun with friends, glamorous work, excitement. I was one of those children who couldn't wait to grow up, preferred hanging out with the adults, and wanted to play pretend games like secretary (I know, I know...my parents were concerned, but took it in stride), private detectives (for the record, I was one of Charlie's angels), etc. In fact, I loved nothing more than playing with candy cigarettes while drinking my Mountain Dew out of a sherbert glass and pretending it was champagne (I'm sure you can imagine how much by Baptist, teetotaler, non-smoking mother enjoyed my doing that). Anyway, I was convinced that being a grown-up was nothing but glamour, glamour, glamour.........imagine my surpise when I realized every evening of champagne is balanced by at least of day of yard work, cleaning the litter box, and figuring out how to stretch the already stretched budget to pay for room damage not covered by insurance. Oh well, such is life.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, today is not one of those dreary days. I have to spend a little time helping a dear friend get her brand new house ready for her husband's 60th birthday blowout. A sneak of some of the projects I've worked on for the house:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Anx22_Z64TU/UIvhZkAnHBI/AAAAAAAADTM/6IICTUiWUNw/s1600/dr+art.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Anx22_Z64TU/UIvhZkAnHBI/AAAAAAAADTM/6IICTUiWUNw/s640/dr+art.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nluxoTv64zA/UIvhhpsdLlI/AAAAAAAADTU/LcMwx95Xov0/s1600/dr+fireplace+sneak+peek.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nluxoTv64zA/UIvhhpsdLlI/AAAAAAAADTU/LcMwx95Xov0/s640/dr+fireplace+sneak+peek.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, a few hours as a shop boy (I know it's a stretch to refer to myself as boy at my age, but shop man just doesn't have the right ring to it) at the gallery on Magazine St. that features my art.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Afterwards, a quick dash back to help with final party arrangements. Then, a wedding uptown followed by a reception at the Musee' Conti, the fantastic old wax museum in the French Quarter. I've never been there, but I've heard the renovated reception space is fantastic. I'm so excited. And, the Quarter should be hopping tonight....there's a huge Halloween charity event in Armstrong Park, Madonna is in concert in the city tonight, and it's the big Halloween weekend. This may finally be the night I stay up past 10.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My outfit for the day. I don't really have time to change between events, so I needed something versatile and comfortable enough for all day, so I'm going for this pale blue shirt, unlined kakhi jacket (it finally cooled off here, vest, and the only tie left over from my tie wearing days that actually kind of sort of matched. But honestly, it's all about the vest, because I MADE THAT BITCH MYSELF!!!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YV2_F3eEH40/UIvlxXtiQVI/AAAAAAAADUE/k6Oivo3aIhE/s1600/vest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YV2_F3eEH40/UIvlxXtiQVI/AAAAAAAADUE/k6Oivo3aIhE/s640/vest.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Recently I decided I needed to improve my sewing skills if I ever wanted to be a great tailor, which I do. It's been so long (since junior high) since I've sewn, and even thing it was only basic shorts with drawstrings, so I needed to smart small. Thank God I did. This vest is about as basic is as it gets, and I still had some major issues. Let's just say I beg you not to look at the bottom buttonhole. Still, it turned out good enough that I plan to wear it in public. I especially like the details, such as the claddagh buttons:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rNQj0gnb9xU/UIvleOBJsgI/AAAAAAAADTw/QlqeBzr5RAE/s1600/IMG_0925.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="566" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rNQj0gnb9xU/UIvleOBJsgI/AAAAAAAADTw/QlqeBzr5RAE/s640/IMG_0925.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
And the contrast print lining:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SjX6kqs-Wy0/UIvlk-v_z2I/AAAAAAAADT4/TGxCsxTGFqw/s1600/lining.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SjX6kqs-Wy0/UIvlk-v_z2I/AAAAAAAADT4/TGxCsxTGFqw/s640/lining.jpg" width="478" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Again, I beg you to ignore that nasty, nasty looking bottom buttonhole.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm finishing the look with dark, dark dressy jeans and brown boots. I did double check with the bride and make sure that the outfit would be appropriate. She assured me it would. Actually, she said something along the lines of , "I have more important things to worry about than your damn outfit. As long as you have on pants, I could care less what they're made off." Asking my partner for his opinion, I received the helpful observation, "You're going to a reception in the French Quarter at a wax museum on Halloween Weekend. You could go wearing a Little Bo-Peep costume and no one would notice." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, off to face the day.</div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-peznemxwBMg/UIqjqyX0hWI/AAAAAAAADRU/iz_NxS-NdBs/s1600/with+flanking+shelves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-icQ1lPZ-rfM/UIqjwilartI/AAAAAAAADRc/hXdLFYxYUdc/s1600/flanking.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-icQ1lPZ-rfM/UIqjwilartI/AAAAAAAADRc/hXdLFYxYUdc/s640/flanking.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
You know, there may actually be something to this slow steady progress thing. Working on a project an<br />
hour or two a day, a little at a time. Usually, I'm more (pardon the expression) of a balls to the wall d-i-yer---jumping in with abandon, often without full preparation. The kind that rips the room apart, throws the contents into another, plows into painting.....and thus lives with chaos until the project is complete, which, as life gets in the way, drags on and on. Don't get me wrong...there is something exhilarating about rushing through something from start to finish in a weekend (Trading Spaces was a hit for a reason), but I've learned with this project, going slow can be nice. I've seen steady progress, and as I've only done a little portion of the room as a time, I haven't needed to trash other areas to clean it out---i've been able to deal with the appropriate disposal or organization of the laundry room's contents as I've removed them.<br />
<br />
Anway, here's what's happened so far:<br />
<br />
I've flanked the window with a second set of wine box shelves, removed the black shelves from the corner (gifted to my partner's twin for his own laundry room), removed the excess trash can, removed the shelf from over the washer and dryer and cleaned floor.<br />
<br />
I've also hinged the salvaged doors into a screen, though I've not yet cleaned them or added hooks. Gross, I know, but I wanted to get them out of my cabanna and in place as quickly as possible. Since the laundry hasn't gotten it's hard core clean or had any fabric added, I'm okay with bringing in less than pristine items. I will make sure to scrub them, and the room before I add the curtains and table skirt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-icQ1lPZ-rfM/UIqjwilartI/AAAAAAAADRc/hXdLFYxYUdc/s1600/flanking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OgkjSo6nvBY/UIqj3W4cpmI/AAAAAAAADRo/PdikXTzG0t0/s1600/screen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OgkjSo6nvBY/UIqj3W4cpmI/AAAAAAAADRo/PdikXTzG0t0/s640/screen.jpg" width="546" /></a></div>
Remember, at the beginning of the week, this wall looked like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pm6xYZX_KY/UIakNKML_PI/AAAAAAAADL8/fbUleeAED48/s1600/laundry+before+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pm6xYZX_KY/UIakNKML_PI/AAAAAAAADL8/fbUleeAED48/s640/laundry+before+3.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, it looks like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-peznemxwBMg/UIqjqyX0hWI/AAAAAAAADRU/iz_NxS-NdBs/s1600/with+flanking+shelves.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-peznemxwBMg/UIqjqyX0hWI/AAAAAAAADRU/iz_NxS-NdBs/s640/with+flanking+shelves.jpg" width="444" /></a></div>
I'm planning to skirt the table (my old sewing table which had been moved into my studio when I updated to the green writing desk) in a drop cloth and add curtains in Waverly's Paddock shawl, a fabric I've loved forever. In fact, the fabric I'm planning to use was purchased to make a window treatment 7 years ago that i never got around to before moving. It didn't fit my current home, so I carefully stored it away. A good thing, because while the pattern is still in production, I'm not sure my color way is. Here is a pillow from Etsy seller land of pillows in it:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GKWU_jR7iZk/UIqobJz9EsI/AAAAAAAADSI/vaimzjVBctc/s1600/il_570xN.69021821.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="313" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GKWU_jR7iZk/UIqobJz9EsI/AAAAAAAADSI/vaimzjVBctc/s320/il_570xN.69021821.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">pillow available <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/24540342/paisley-throw-pillow-paddock-shawl">here</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The skirt will look something like this, but with the pleats only at the apex of the curves. I'm skirting it because a drop cloth is cheaper than a table, and since it rolls, I like to use the table outside for painting. I can just whip the skirt off for that, and whip it back on to use as a folding table. with a skirt, i can also roll it outside to use a bar or food table for parties. I'm toying with banding it in upholstery webbing, but i'm not sure if i want to go to that much trouble for the laundry room.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dfPhVE044Mk/UIiaP8qHwhI/AAAAAAAADPg/Xxf-tDGB3vQ/s1600/port+tins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="386" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dfPhVE044Mk/UIiaP8qHwhI/AAAAAAAADPg/Xxf-tDGB3vQ/s640/port+tins.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
While I'm been slammed with work and other commitments lately, I'm so excited to finally be moving forward with the laundry room that i just had to get started. While there are many ways to tackle a project, including the all at once approach, sometimes nibbling away a little at a time is the way to go. For this makeover, I think that's the approach I'm going to take.<br />
<br />
Anyway, in the last post I discussed some of the assets I did already possess for turning this laundry room of doom around. One of those sets of assets is the possession of a large number of wine boxes, thanks to a partner who used to work in the wine business. Currently, they weren't really doing me any good. Hard to reach on the shelves, they had become random catch-alls:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RNZ73AyKtk8/UIakSjgODFI/AAAAAAAADME/8_L4laHFKwc/s1600/laundry+before+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RNZ73AyKtk8/UIakSjgODFI/AAAAAAAADME/8_L4laHFKwc/s640/laundry+before+4.jpg" width="478" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Inspired by pinterest, I mounted a set on the wall to the left of the window. They fit perfectly between the corner and the window. I plan to flank the other side of the window with three more, but I have to do some clearing out first. And, as much as I wanted to blow off some commitments in order to continue, I managed to stay strong, do my little bit, and then go to work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just screwed them directly to the wall, making sure to hit a stud. None hold a lot of weight, so there is no need for brackets, supports, etc. I tried them stacked directly on each other, but eventually went for a floating look. Though the spacing may appear off in pics, rest assured I did measure between shelves and check to make sure they were even and level. In fact, you can even see the level in some of the pics:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Grla-_Aqyw/UIlYqCeu-hI/AAAAAAAADQI/YxYkELni_ac/s1600/wine+box+side+view.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Grla-_Aqyw/UIlYqCeu-hI/AAAAAAAADQI/YxYkELni_ac/s640/wine+box+side+view.jpg" width="478" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having shelves up and things neatly put away made a vast improvement. But even though I like open storage, I had to admit they look neat, but not pretty. I mean stacks of white dishes are one thing, but who wants to look at bug spray. Then it hit me, the spray cans were about the same size as some gift canisters I had put away. My partner's work had them left over after Christmas, and he brought them home for me to use. They were a little too tall to fit in my pantry, so they had been languishing away on a shelf. I ran to check, and YES!!!! They were the perfect size for the cans and the shelves.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0NMN-UXdoDE/UIlYzl5OSdI/AAAAAAAADQU/jwhtY-2ycJk/s1600/wine+box+tin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0NMN-UXdoDE/UIlYzl5OSdI/AAAAAAAADQU/jwhtY-2ycJk/s640/wine+box+tin.jpg" width="478" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I immediately ran for more and rounded it up the other canisters and mini-galvanized containers I had. Immediately the shelves looked so much more polished. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aO5BxFJ-xyA/UIlY-C-LuGI/AAAAAAAADQc/w7Awp0wiL7s/s1600/styled+shelves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aO5BxFJ-xyA/UIlY-C-LuGI/AAAAAAAADQc/w7Awp0wiL7s/s640/styled+shelves.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JPaB5iEJJhU/UIlZRWi9YhI/AAAAAAAADQk/mYwklqCBbMo/s1600/wine+box+shelves+closeup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="418" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JPaB5iEJJhU/UIlZRWi9YhI/AAAAAAAADQk/mYwklqCBbMo/s640/wine+box+shelves+closeup.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RV8q257C3Zo/UIlZX3-JOiI/AAAAAAAADQs/D3-dRYxgI5I/s1600/styled+closeup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RV8q257C3Zo/UIlZX3-JOiI/AAAAAAAADQs/D3-dRYxgI5I/s640/styled+closeup.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pm6xYZX_KY/UIakNKML_PI/AAAAAAAADL8/fbUleeAED48/s1600/laundry+before+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
*Note* I do realize storing things away like this may not be the most convenient. However, all these things are rarely used. In fact, I don't even remember the last time I used the bug spray. Furthermore, it's only a household of two, so I don't have to be concerned with multiple members looking for things. If you wanted to do a similar thing with more frequently used items, I would suggest labeling them and/or the shelves.<br />
<br />
Stoked by the small, but major improvement. I hung some woven blinds that used to hang in the living room before I switched to cafe curtains. The wall that used to look like this:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pm6xYZX_KY/UIakNKML_PI/AAAAAAAADL8/fbUleeAED48/s1600/laundry+before+3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pm6xYZX_KY/UIakNKML_PI/AAAAAAAADL8/fbUleeAED48/s640/laundry+before+3.jpg" width="478" /> </a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now looks more like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Do you make quick decisions? Or are you someone who ruminates? I go back and forth. Like a lot of designers, I can quickly pinpoint the right choices for clients, but I get bogged down in my own home. My laundry room has always been a problem room for me. It has some issues--it's outside, the floor is a concrete slab which gets wet when it rains, the room also must do triple duty as storage, laundry, and powder room. Add to that mismatched appliances, fragile sheetrock, little light, and a non-existenet budget and you have a recipe for a depressing space. If I only went in the room to do laundry, that would be bad enough, but since it's the closest source of water and toilet to my studio, I spend a lot of time in and out. I love my backyard and this black hole has long been a pigeon of discontent. What makes it worse is that I have always had a love of service spaces (must be my peasant roots). I love the downstairs at Downton Abbey and Gosford Park, linen closets, well-stocked pantries, butler's pantries, etc.<br />
<br />
Anyway, even though I've been thinking about that room literally for years, it was on the back burner until I realized I needed it to look great for our Dec. reception where it will be the primary guest bath. I didn't want to just slap lipstick on the pig, though. I wanted to solve it's aesthetic and use issues once and for all.<br />
<br />
As I loaded these pictures, I realized that this horror scene is perfect for the Halloween season. Behold!! The Laundry Room of DOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!! Readers with a weak stomach may want to quickly scroll past these shocking images:<br />

<br />
<br />
In any makeover project, one key to success, is accepting and working with your limitations; limitations of time, budget, space, d-i-y talent, architectural and practical limitations, etc. Fighting against these things will only bring frustration and heartache. It's like trying to recreate a French Chateau in a mid-century ranch---it just ain't gonna happen. You can certainly add French touches to add interest and contrast, but without the enfilade room layout, without the 16 foot ceilings, with the 18th century paneling, etc., it's not gonna happen. At best it will look like what I think of as Disneyland decorating--an obviously fake replica of the real thing; at worst, you'll just be unhappy. What's the point of that rant? Thinking about my inspiration pics, I realized I was dreaming about things that cannot be in my laundry room, at least at this point and time. I can't have custom cabinetry, a counter top and skirt to hide my appliances (we're soon switching the machines to traditional top loaders), a fine floor, built in storage, etc. And that's fine, but I needed to accept that.<br />
<br />
Now that I've had my reality check, what can I do? In a case like this, I always advise clients (and my self) to focus on what you like and will work instead of what you can't have. What can I have? I can have flexibility, a clear conscious from saving money, and a lot of fun, since I'm not planning on serious commitments. <br />
<br />
Anyway, last night after working on my to do list, I started looking for inspiration, primarily about how to turn one of my assets: lots of wine boxes, to use. Turning to pinterest and searching for wine box shelves, this image popped up:<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dkXg9TVfwxw/UIakvKsSeRI/AAAAAAAADNI/rqxkybBlYz0/s1600/laundry+room+boho.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dkXg9TVfwxw/UIakvKsSeRI/AAAAAAAADNI/rqxkybBlYz0/s1600/laundry+room+boho.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dkXg9TVfwxw/UIakvKsSeRI/AAAAAAAADNI/rqxkybBlYz0/s400/laundry+room+boho.jpg" width="318" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And, ding, the light bulb went off. What styles do I love, and have always loved? Industrial and Boho. This image clicked all my boxes---instead of trying for tasteful elegance, why not embrace the electic mix I will by necessity have? After looking around on line, I realized that the above reminded me of this home office/cottage from the September 2012 issue of Country Living (one of those magazines where I loved every image):</div>

I love the color scheme, texture of the walls, and ,even though the furnishings are new, the "found object" feel of the space. In fact, this photo convinced me to keep the current wall color. However, I love the black with the pale woods and blue green wall....where to put it? Then it hit me----on the ceiling! I can't wait.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Voila: I now have my direction. Faux bois walls, using the current wall color as base. After all I chose the color to help the mismatched washer blend, and while it will leave soon, I don't know when. I want the overall palette of the walls to resemble this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tuufXaBT5AI/UIawOyTD0OI/AAAAAAAADOc/tlBg46_B5AM/s1600/little-house-on-the-lake-mobile-sideboard-0912-mdn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J7vFOuz7fh0/UIakrjrw0zI/AAAAAAAADM0/BrZe9vSojxs/s1600/laundry+walls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> </a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J7vFOuz7fh0/UIakrjrw0zI/AAAAAAAADM0/BrZe9vSojxs/s1600/laundry+walls.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J7vFOuz7fh0/UIakrjrw0zI/AAAAAAAADM0/BrZe9vSojxs/s400/laundry+walls.jpg" width="314" /></a></div>
<br />
But I'm going to do the faux bois with a much more light hearted approach, ala Richard Woods:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tJvsUZSXOsM/UIakuRjl_gI/AAAAAAAADNA/5t8XDfX2k00/s1600/faux+bois+bar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tJvsUZSXOsM/UIakuRjl_gI/AAAAAAAADNA/5t8XDfX2k00/s400/faux+bois+bar.jpg" width="316" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">via House Beautiful</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dkXg9TVfwxw/UIakvKsSeRI/AAAAAAAADNI/rqxkybBlYz0/s1600/laundry+room+boho.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
I plan on installing the wine box shelves to the left of the windows, but more like this than the inspiration photo (the window frame will remain in it's distressed, unfinished state:<br />
<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I3OQ5AjeXPg/UIakv0d2lPI/AAAAAAAADNQ/zV58bKjjj7o/s1600/laundry+room+shelves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I3OQ5AjeXPg/UIakv0d2lPI/AAAAAAAADNQ/zV58bKjjj7o/s400/laundry+room+shelves.jpg" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">via pinterest</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I was originally planning to paint the sink cabinet to blend with the raw woods, but now I think I need a metallic. I plan on doing a heavily distressed zinc-like finish based on these Restoration Hardward nightstands:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ONoXs9aIt6c/UIakwaNbpfI/AAAAAAAADNY/2_ljR7rySw4/s1600/zinc+nightstand.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ONoXs9aIt6c/UIakwaNbpfI/AAAAAAAADNY/2_ljR7rySw4/s1600/zinc+nightstand.jpg" /></a></div>
This photo really has the look I'm going for. I think I'll rig a similar light for over the sink:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5FJMbpZT8z8/UIak1Yg8OHI/AAAAAAAADNg/ChyQq4LkToU/s1600/via+pinterest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5FJMbpZT8z8/UIak1Yg8OHI/AAAAAAAADNg/ChyQq4LkToU/s400/via+pinterest.jpg" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">via pinterest</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And to hide the clutter in the corner? I originally planned to have a carpenter mount a salvaged door I have like this, but further from the wall with a curtain as door:<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fxKFZ392ubU/UIalBj4GERI/AAAAAAAADNw/k7VgIuO_R8I/s1600/salvaged+door.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fxKFZ392ubU/UIalBj4GERI/AAAAAAAADNw/k7VgIuO_R8I/s1600/salvaged+door.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fxKFZ392ubU/UIalBj4GERI/AAAAAAAADNw/k7VgIuO_R8I/s400/salvaged+door.jpg" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><u>via pinterest</u></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><u><br /></u></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><u><br /></u></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
But since then, my partner found two small doors, so I am planning to add them to make a screen. This is great, because now I don't have to wait for or pay a carpenter. I plan to add hooks for hanging clothes to dry. Plus, it's non permanent, which I love:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qGlHZABvIns/UIalA1pp_7I/AAAAAAAADNo/0-I0wHH7VqA/s1600/door+screen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qGlHZABvIns/UIalA1pp_7I/AAAAAAAADNo/0-I0wHH7VqA/s400/door+screen.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">via pinterest</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I plan to replicate this drying rack, but (since we're a small household only one rod):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fxKFZ392ubU/UIalBj4GERI/AAAAAAAADNw/k7VgIuO_R8I/s1600/salvaged+door.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Penelope Bianchi via Velvet and Linen</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fxKFZ392ubU/UIalBj4GERI/AAAAAAAADNw/k7VgIuO_R8I/s1600/salvaged+door.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Finishing touches: A gallery wall behind the machines, mirror over the sink, and black and white touches like a trompe l'oeil zebra rug painted directly on the concrete floor, new curtains made from tea-stained zebra print fabric (mainly because i have it).<br />
<br />
Finally, I'm excited about this room. Unfortunately, I have a busy week, so I doubt I can make any progress before this weekend, but I'm just so stoked to have a direction. And one that seems doable.<br />

I love writing desks. I actually have two in my home, one in my dedicated home office, a black asian style of somewhat recent vintage. (It's one of the few pieces in my home that came from a regular furniture store. I bought it after Katrina from the store at which I worked):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4PjXA68nhAg/TdBFuhMQPVI/AAAAAAAACjc/_DAYUo9cwgQ/s1600/bookcase.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4PjXA68nhAg/TdBFuhMQPVI/AAAAAAAACjc/_DAYUo9cwgQ/s640/bookcase.jpg" width="430" /></a></div>
<br />
And I have a vintage hotel desk that I recently painted to use as a desk/sewing table in my guest room:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ZuHeq2pWVY/UB6gjSdFaTI/AAAAAAAADHc/e45cMQTBO5w/s1600/finished+desk3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ZuHeq2pWVY/UB6gjSdFaTI/AAAAAAAADHc/e45cMQTBO5w/s640/finished+desk3.jpg" width="454" /></a></div>
<br />
And one of my favorite things to use a writing desk for is making a list. I love making lists, I always have. Or as least as long as I can remember. In fact, when I was young, my favorite fictional character, one I greatly identified with, was Betsy Ray of the Betsy-Tacy series. And one of the reason I liked her so was because of her constant list making. Betsy used her uncle's trunk as a writing desk. I managed to scavenge an old trunk for my room to use as a writing desk. Believe me, even as a teenager, kneeling on a tile floor to try and do your homework on a trunk is not easy. Let's just say that experience was one of the ways I learned to know the difference between what works in fiction and what works in real life.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YwrUxgn6ZXg/UIYQ4AW6WMI/AAAAAAAADLQ/kZExV3HU_-I/s1600/BTT2012b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="317" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YwrUxgn6ZXg/UIYQ4AW6WMI/AAAAAAAADLQ/kZExV3HU_-I/s400/BTT2012b.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">In Vera Neville's charming illustration, Betsy ray is making one of her lists on the trunk she used as her writing desk.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I really do find that planning is always the key to any successful project, and, for me, planning always begins with a list. As I mentioned in my last post, beyond my usual fall nesting syndrome, I have an event coming up at my house in Dec. (my reception for our commitment ceremony), and I'd like the house to look it's best. Therefore, I've been compiling my to do list.<br />
<br />
However, before diving into the ugliness of all I have to do to make my house pretty again, let's look at some pretty pictures: writing desks and home offices from Elle Decor. All have the Boho look I love (translation.....there's a lot happening in these rooms---except perhaps for purging and dusting):<br />

My Current To Do List:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Deadline: Dec. 21, 2012</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
*Note* While I would like to accomplish everything on this list, and by my commitment ceremony, a lot of the times are of a non-essential nature. That is, they're about fine tuning some decor items or change for change's sake. I do plan to focus on the more important items. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These important items include repairing and finishing items in the backyard, which is where I'm planning to have my reception. The other big priority is doing something to my laundry room, because it includes a sink and toilet and is, in essence, my powder room when I use the backyard for entertaining. I started talking about decorating the room in the spring, but have made very little progress beyond some very basic plans.</div>

Every decor fan (or fiend) has one.....tear sheets or images of a favorite design project that you go back to again and again. I think this project by Michael DePerno (<a href="http://www.michaeldeperno.com)/">website</a>) has to be my absolute favorite of all time. It was the cover story for Elle Decor's May 2003 issue (<a href="http://michaeldeperno.com/articles/elle-decor-may-2003-article">link to article</a>). That cover has lived on various inspiration boards since I got my copy of that issue. It's such a timeless look, that it's hard to believe that these interiors were created 10 years ago. ( At his website, he has photos from an earlier shoot for an L,.A. magazine. It was fun to see the evolution from the bare bones of the design to the finished project as he layered in more accessories, washed out color, and details.) They, alas are no more. Mr. DePerno moved to Sonoma. His current mid-century home was published by Elle Decor last summer (<a href="http://michaeldeperno.com/articles/elle-decor-june-2011-article">link to article</a>).</div>

Besides just to look at something pretty, there is a reason that I went searching for pics of this house (my cover survived Katrina---my copy of the magazine did not): it's time to freshen up my house. It's necessary for a couple of reasons. First, some of the decor is five years old, and five years in a busy household can take it's toll. Next, I just like change. Since my house was styled for a photo shoot last winter, I've kept it mainly as it was, including some graphic fabrics, layering prints, and pulling out my more colorful accessories. I've enjoyed it, but now I'm ready to settle down for something more neutral. There won't be any big changes---time and money shortages prohibit that, but I do plan to rearrange some art, move around some textiles, etc. Mainly in the living/dining room. Hence, my urge to see these beautiful, restrained interiors. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x_s2v_nbMwc/UIP_7El-70I/AAAAAAAADJg/BBvOLAjEHd8/s1600/elledecor2003-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x_s2v_nbMwc/UIP_7El-70I/AAAAAAAADJg/BBvOLAjEHd8/s1600/elledecor2003-3.jpg" /></a></div>
But, I have a more urgent reason to get my hizzle's shizzle together. My partner of seven years and I are planning a commitment ceremony in December, including a large party at the house. So, after months of procrastinating, I've finally realized it's the final countdown. After wandering around this morning with my coffee, I've realized I need a list. Shaken to the core by it's growing length and the shortening deadline (Dec. 21, 2012), I've decided to sit down with another cup of coffee and hope that looking at serene interiors will trigger a resulting serenity of spirit. h. m. settoonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08120515504564079334noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810339136726843596.post-499142988113912692012-08-03T07:58:00.003-05:002012-08-05T12:10:35.827-05:00the green deskI did it. I actually completed a project in a timely manner, AND took pictures before and after, AND finished it in time for Monday's Linky parties. This must be a first.<br />
<br />
Actually, finishing the project was easy...this was one of those that I was very excited about doing. I've wanted to replace that white melamine sewing table for five years. I ordered it on impulse and have hated it since the day it arrived. It was relatively expensive (for melamine) so I hated to spend even more money to replace it, even though I longed for a writing desk instead. Several times I've been tempted to go ahead and replace it, but something held me back. I'm glad the design gods intervened because I love, love, LOVE the lines of the new desk. Best of all...it was free! It was a part of the old decor of a hotel project I'm working on, and the owner's wife let me have one of them. I even already had a can of paint in the exact shade of green (I'm not even sure why I bought it...I found it cleaning out my studio), so the painting portion cost me nothing as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-toy0mNGg2qQ/UB6gzlfhleI/AAAAAAAADHs/q4KSfpeMcbo/s1600/seat+at+desk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-toy0mNGg2qQ/UB6gzlfhleI/AAAAAAAADHs/q4KSfpeMcbo/s640/seat+at+desk.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My inspiration was this beautiful show house room below by Peter Dunham. I loved the pop of the emerald green and I the colors and tone on tone inspiration board reminded me of my guest room walls. And, in the wider shot, you can see that the color and pattern are balanced by wide swathes of white in the trim, ceiling, and other furniture.<br />

<br />
I took a couple of pics of the other side of the guest room to show you that I have a similar situation. While the walls are dark and heavily patterned, that is balanced by a creamy white ceiling, bone bedding, and creamy white draperies on the windows and used as closet doors.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's my version:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oRBVd74TYEc/UB6iKwkZTLI/AAAAAAAADIQ/KhOsh8HGBXk/s1600/finished+desk3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oRBVd74TYEc/UB6iKwkZTLI/AAAAAAAADIQ/KhOsh8HGBXk/s640/finished+desk3.jpg" width="454" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
It's certainly not an exact replica, but I think it captures the feel very well. In any case, I love it. I also found some small, strong magnets that let me finally use my magnetic primer inspiration wall the way I had hoped to.<br />
<br />
I did go with a heavily distressed "fauxtique" finish on the desk:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fh7UQ5B1huc/UB6gSBwyKRI/AAAAAAAADHI/WY0KdPjmcnc/s1600/drawer+detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fh7UQ5B1huc/UB6gSBwyKRI/AAAAAAAADHI/WY0KdPjmcnc/s400/drawer+detail.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's what the desk looked like before:<br />

(BTW, Elle Decor is the absolute worst about that). Anyway, I realize I'm almost as bad. I'll mention a project, and then give no further info.<br />

I'm determined to turn over a new blog leaf, so here's an update on my <a href="http://optimismandwhitepaint.blogspot.com/2012/07/dream-desk.html">dream desk</a>. In case you don't want to have to go to the previous post, here's a pic (which is familiar to basically anyone who's ever read a design blog) of Peter Dunham's green desk in the Windsor Smith Veranda Show House:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VC68ok7QbrY/UAV35mtLZ2I/AAAAAAAADEE/xEFmWTK_7Ms/s1600/green+desk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VC68ok7QbrY/UAV35mtLZ2I/AAAAAAAADEE/xEFmWTK_7Ms/s640/green+desk.jpg" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the desk I started with in it's original condition:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VY5ycDr2Xf0/UBvHIAD8BnI/AAAAAAAADF8/2ytINdWXyGA/s1600/desk+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h5O9i-ykIK8/UAV_CrpoAgI/AAAAAAAADEQ/FjVUl3HmlK4/s1600/Photo.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h5O9i-ykIK8/UAV_CrpoAgI/AAAAAAAADEQ/FjVUl3HmlK4/s400/Photo.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
While I love Dunham's whole room above, and it's definitely the Boho vibe I live for and with, it's still a little too dressy for me. I wanted a more "lived in" look; besides, I haven't created any "fauxtiques" in a while, so decided to go for a more distressed look. Trolling the internet for inspiration and authentic wear patterns on painted antiques, I found the following:<br />

I'll describe what I did (with pics) when I finish, but at this point, I've painted the top in a faux bois to match legs, pre planned missing paint chunks with blue tape, given two coats of pale blue primer, and given two coats of green. If the weather holds out, I have plans to finish the distressing this weekend.<br />
